ファーンは椅子をぶんなぐり、外へ走って行きました。

草原はぬれており、春の香りがしました。

ファームのスニーカーは、お父さんに追いついた時には、びしょびしょでした。

☆ファーンは椅子をぶん殴り、お父さんを追いかけて外に飛び出しました。
外は、春の香りがして、草原はぬれていました。お父さんに追いついた時には、
ファーンのスニーカーはびしょびしょにぬれていました。

びしょぬれの、ずぶぬれの（soaked)

こういう時は、どんな風に？

‘Do away with it?’ shrieked Fern. ‘You mean kill it? 
Just because it’s smaller than the others?’

Mrs Arable put a pitcher of cream on the table. 
‘Don’t yell, Fern!’ she said.’Your father is right.
 The pig would probably die anyway.’

‘Do away with it?’ shrieked Fern.

ファームは大きな声でおこって「育てないって!？」と言いました。

‘You mean kill it? Just because it’s smaller than the others?’

ころしちゃうの？ただ、ほかのこぶたより小さいから？

（子どもの本なのに、殺すって使っていいのかな・・？なんて表現したらいいんだろう）

Mrs Arable put a pitcher of cream on the table.

お母さんは、みるくが入った入れものをテーブルにおきました。

 ‘Don’t yell, Fern!’ she said

「ファーン！大きなこえを出さないで」とお母さんは言いました。

.’Your father is right. The pig would probably die anyway.’

おとうさんは正しいわ。たぶん、こぶたはしんでしまうと思うわ」

☆     ファームはおこって「育てないって!？ころしちゃうの？
ただ、ほかのこぶたより小さいから？」と大きな声で言いました。

お母さんは、みるくが入った　入れものをテーブルにおきながら、

「ファーン！大きなこえを出さないで、お父さんは正しいわ。
たぶん、こぶたは何もしないでも、しんでしまうと思うわ。」

と言いました。

 

さぁ！これが初めての翻訳です。

Before Breakfast

‘ Where’s Papa going with that axe? ’ said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.

‘Out to the hoghouse,’ replied Mrs Arable.
 ‘Some pigs were born last night.’ ‘I don’t see why he needs an axe,’ continued fern, who was only eight.

‘Well,’ said her mother, ‘one of the pigs is a runt. 
It’s very small and weak, and it will never 
amount to anything. 
So your father has decided to do away with it.’

 

Before Breakfast

朝ごはんの前

「パパ、おのを持ってどこへ行くの？」と、テーブルに朝ごはんの用意をしている時に、ファーンはお母さんに聞きました。

‘Out to the hoghouse,’ replied Mrs Arable.

「ぶた小屋に行くんだよ」とお母さんは答えました。

 ‘Some pigs were born last night.’

きのうの夜、ぶたたちが生まれたのよ。

‘I don’t see why he needs an axe,’ continued fern, who was only eight.

８才のファーンは、「わたしは、わからないわ、どうしておのがいるのよ。」と聞きました。

‘Well,’ said her mother, ‘one of the pigs is a runt.

お母さんは答えました。「そうね」「とても小さいぶたが、１ぴきいるの」

「とても小さくて、かよわいの。他のぶたみたいに大きくならないのよ」

だから、お父さんは、そのぶたを育てないの。

 

☆     朝ごはんの前

「パパ、おのを持ってどこへ行くの？」と、テーブルに朝ごはんの用意をしている時に、
ファーンはお母さんに聞きました。

「昨日の夜、ぶたたちが生まれたの。だから、ぶた小屋に行くんだよ」とお母さんは答えました。

８才のファーンは、「わからないわ、どうしておのがいるのよ。」と聞きました。

「そうね、とても小さいぶたが、１ぴきいるの。とても小さくて、かよわいの。

他のぶたみたいに大きくならないのよ。だから、お父さんは、そのぶたを育てないの。

」とお母さんは答えました。
